According to a UN report, the elderly will account for 4.5% of the world population by the year 2030 and nearly 10% by 2050 (UN DESA 2011). In many countries in Africa, the proportion of older persons will be close to that of industrialized countries by 2050. In Sub-Saharan Africa, it is estimated that the number of older people will be 157million. As of 2019, Kenya had approximately 1.2 million people aged over 65 years of age in a population of 38.6 million. This figure has since grown.
In old age, one is less strong, less productive, and hence locked out of the employment space. With no assured income, and at a time when prone to all manner of both physiological and psychological health challenges, life for many of the elderly people can turn out to be overbearingly miserable. Lack of family support further compounds their circumstances, and alienates them into a life of loneliness, vulnerability and suffering.
The key needs of the elderly people include financial security, personal security and safety, good health, dignity, and self-fulfillment. The elderly do also desire to be involved and included, unconditionally appreciated, and supported to live their sunset years comfortably.
Agewell hopes to positively impact in the lives of the targeted elderly people by creating a supportive and caring environment that guarantees them a healthy and graceful aging characterized by happiness, warmth and compassion.
We conduct education, awareness and sensitization on care for the elderly people in the society and issues affecting them in old age.
We organize get-together events and activities for the elderly for them to meet and connect with their age mates/ peers, share experiences and exchange ideas.
We lobby and advocate for the protection of the rights and interests of the elderly.
